Economic Development

            I believe that if Pembroke Pines is going to thrive as a city, we need to encourage more economic growth, moving away from such a high reliance on income from property taxes. We need to encourage business and industry to move into our city, offering incentives that encourage companies to come and stay here, looking for solutions that are beneficial to everyone involved. Some of these incentives include streamlining the building process, making it transparent, efficient, and fair for everyone. That is not to say that we give business a free pass to ignore the rules and regulations that protect us all. Rather, we offer assistance and encouragement to firms that follow the rules, treat employees fairly, and bring good-paying jobs to our city. A specific pledge that I make is to work to continue to expand business development at the North Perry Airport. There is room, and potential opportunities to attract companies to that airport that will create additional high-paying, skilled labor jobs. I promise to work to bring these companies to Pembroke Pines.

Unions

As an active union member, I have been in unions for the majority of my career. I have served in both volunteer positions and paid roles, all while flying a full schedule. My union work ranges from helping mediate disputes between pilots on a Professional Standards committee to helping pilots with significant personal issues as a Peer Assist Volunteer and then working to revamp our program on the National Committee. I have been a full-time negotiator as well as worked a Strike Preparedness Committee as our negotiations were not productive. I also helped to form our first union at a non-union cargo airline, as well as participated in writing our Constitution and Bylaws and first contract. The one common belief I held through all of this work has been that the union exists to protect the rights and improve the life of the worker. In nearly all of my union work, we were able to accomplish a lot by building and maintaining a productive, professional relationship with our management. We were able to collaborate on many projects, helping improve the company while improving the lives of the pilots. Another positive aspect of unions is that when a contract is in place and is adhered to by both sides, the expectations for the worker and the company are clearly spelled out. This is beneficial to everyone.

If elected, I pledge to deal with all of the unions in the City fairly and transparently, balancing the interests of the workers with the needs of our citizens and the financial situation of the city.

Como miembro sindical activo, he estado en sindicatos durante la mayor parte de mi carrera. Otro aspecto positivo de los sindicatos es que cuando existe un contrato y ambas partes lo respetan, las expectativas para el trabajador y la empresa están claramente detalladas. The Environment

El medio ambiente

            Who does not want clean air and water? Who does not want parks and greenspaces, as well as safe areas for our children and our dogs to play? That means we need to care for and protect those areas. It involves incentivizing both businesses and individuals to act responsibly. One way to do that is to bring back recycling collection in Pembroke Pines. While we cannot ever legislate responsible behavior, we can encourage and support it. The most important pledge I can make to you, the voters, is that I will fight against the proposed incinerator project in our area. I will not work for, nor take money from the lobbying groups representing this project. Can my opponents truthfully make the same promise? I cannot promise that we will win this fight, but I can, and do promise to fight against it until all legal options have been exhausted.

            Another promise I make is that I will look at ways to improve the traffic problems we face in Pembroke Pines. There are solutions that I have seen first-hand in other cities that work to ease traffic congestion and to improve traffic safety. Easing congestion and increasing efficiency of traffic flow serves several purposes. First, it improves safety by lessening the stress involved with driving in our city. Secondly, it directly improves the lives of our citizens by saving money and by providing more free time that would otherwise be wasted driving. Finally, it lessens the impact on our environment by reducing fuel burn and emissions. Again, who does not like clean air and water?

The Role of Local Government

            As a registered independent, my views on government fall squarely in the middle of the political spectrum, with the need for a balanced approach — providing services, while maintaining efficiency and trust. I believe that the local government has certain responsibilities to its residents in regards to these services. It is the local government’s primary responsibility to protect its citizens, providing safety and security for them. This includes protecting both individuals’ lives and their property. This protection comes in the form of properly trained and equipped Police and Fire Departments. It also comes in the form of equitable enforcement of Codes. That said, it is absolutely imperative that the government remember that it exists to serve the people, not for its own self-promotion. That means that it is essential that the government offer solutions alongside enforcement. I pledge to promote a more cooperative, problem-solving attitude by the government when dealing with residents’ concerns or issues. This cooperative attitude can only come through trust, which relies on transparency, honesty, and efficiency. I pledge to listen to residents of our city when they have issues, help them cut through red tape, and encourage the city offices to help them solve these problems.

First Responders

            As an airline pilot, I understand the awesome responsibility of making decisions that have serious consequences, including ramifications on safety and even life. I know what it means to adhere to strict standard operating procedures, but then be forced to make timely decisions with limited available information. Our first responders find themselves in that type of situation daily — working under strict guidelines, and often forced to make split-second decisions with limited information. Then after the fact, the decisions are closely scrutinized without considering the limitations they faced at the time, often by people that have no understanding of their responsibilities. With this understanding comes my pledge that, as long as they are following procedure/protocols and are acting in good faith, I will stand firmly behind our first responders. This support includes a promise to fight to secure the best training and equipment possible for them. I also pledge to listen to their expert voices and experience when developing and modernizing procedures. This pledge extends to working with them rather than against them in contract negotiations in order to secure a collective bargaining agreement that is fair and industry standard.

Community Mental Health

            This is one of the most important issues to me. I have been involved in the mental health field since 2008 when I completed my first Masters Degree in Pastoral Counseling. I believe that this issue touches almost every aspect of citizens’ lives from crime to education to economics. I also believe that one responsibility of government is to improve the lives of its citizens and support other organizations that do that. One way to do this is to provide resources to agencies that provide mental health services. The local level is the ideal place to provide this support, as it has the most contact with both providers and recipients. Through my work as a volunteer counselor, peer-support volunteer, and now mental health advocate for pilots, I have seen first-hand how effect local partnerships can be. If elected, I will explore ways that the city of Pembroke Pines can form and enhance partnerships with local providers, in order to increase the availability of mental health services to our citizens.
