Why I Am Running

Politics are a mess in this country. Whether you look at the national level, the state level, or the local level, divisiveness, insults, and bickering dominate the political landscape. My goal is to restore the people’s trust in our local government, by taking an honest and transparent approach to helping the citizens of Pembroke Pines. This means being open and honest about who pays my salary and with whom I make deals. Furthermore, as an independent, I am not beholden to any single party or platform. I am free to work with everyone in support of the ideas and policies that are best for all of us.

La política es un desastre en este país. Ya sea que se mire a nivel nacional, estatal o local, la división, los insultos y las disputas dominan el panorama político. Mi objetivo es restaurar la confianza de la gente en nuestro gobierno local, adoptando un enfoque honesto y transparente para ayudar a los ciudadanos de Pembroke Pines. My Qualifications

My mix of work experience, education, and community service uniquely prepares me to serve as a commissioner for the City of Pembroke Pines. Much of how I work as an airline Captain directly relates to the work of a city commissioner. Every day, I am responsible for hundreds of lives. I am required to make timely decisions, often with limited information, in a rapidly changing environment. In order to do this, I must be able to divide my attention, prioritize tasks, and properly utilize all of my available resources. This process, known as Threat and Error Management in the airline world, is similar to executive-level decision-making. While I am not required to be an expert in every aspect of the operation I am required to have a basic understanding of them, and how they fit together to form the “big picture.” I see the role of the Commissioner as very similar to this, involving an understanding of the individual departments, but relying on the individual expert for detailed knowledge when making decisions. For example, when helping a constituent with a building/permitting matter, I will not have all of the building codes memorized. Rather, I will know who to talk to, and then trust the expertise of the people working in the building department, who are the experts in their field.

Mi combinación de experiencia laboral, educación y servicio comunitario me prepara de manera única para servir como comisionado de la ciudad de Pembroke Pines. Gran parte de mi trabajo como capitán de aerolínea se relaciona directamente con el trabajo de un comisionado de la ciudad. Cada día soy responsable de cientos de vidas. Debo tomar decisiones oportunas, a menudo con información limitada, en un entorno que cambia rápidamente. Para hacer esto, debo poder dividir mi atención, priorizar tareas y utilizar adecuadamente todos mis recursos disponibles. Este proceso, conocido como Gestión de Amenazas y Errores en el mundo de las aerolíneas, es similar a la toma de decisiones a nivel ejecutivo. Si bien no es necesario que sea un experto en todos los aspectos de la operación, sí se requiere que tenga un conocimiento básico de ellos y de cómo encajan para formar el “panorama general”. Considero que el papel del Comisario es muy similar a este: implica la comprensión de los distintos departamentos, pero depende del experto individual para obtener conocimientos detallados a la hora de tomar decisiones. Por ejemplo, cuando ayudo a un elector con un asunto de construcción/permisos, no tendré memorizados todos los códigos de construcción. Más bien, sabré con quién hablar y luego confiaré en la experiencia de las personas que trabajan en el departamento de construcción, que son los expertos en su campo.

My education has helped me develop a skill-set that will also help me to be a true servant-leader in government service. My MBA and my Doctorate in Business Administration gave me a fundamental understanding of how business and economics work. More importantly, my Doctoral studies taught me how to approach a problem from an unbiased perspective – how to identify a problem and how to find workable solutions. The key to my approach is efficiently organizing the data – listening to the experts to understand an issue. My graduate work and Masters degrees in counselling taught me an equally important skill – how to be empathetic, actively listening and understanding other peoples’ perspectives. Through hundreds of hours of practice, I learned to sit quietly and listen, working to really hear what the other person is saying. My religious studies broadened my perspectives, helping me to not just listen to, but truly understand differing views and beliefs.

Mi educación me ha ayudado a desarrollar un conjunto de habilidades que también me ayudarán a ser un verdadero líder servidor en el servicio gubernamental. Mi MBA y mi Doctorado en Administración de Empresas me brindaron una comprensión fundamental de cómo funcionan los negocios y la economía. Más importante aún, mis estudios de doctorado me enseñaron cómo abordar un problema desde una perspectiva imparcial: cómo identificar un problema y cómo encontrar soluciones viables. La clave de mi enfoque es organizar los datos de manera eficiente: escuchar a los expertos para comprender un problema. Mi trabajo de posgrado y mi maestría en consejería me enseñaron una habilidad igualmente importante: cómo ser empático, escuchar activamente y comprender las perspectivas de otras personas. A través de cientos de horas de práctica, aprendí a sentarme en silencio y escuchar, trabajando para escuchar realmente lo que dice la otra persona. Mis estudios religiosos ampliaron mis perspectivas, ayudándome no sólo a escuchar, sino a comprender verdaderamente los diferentes puntos de vista y creencias.

Combining these skills is critical in public debate, particularly if we want to keep these debates civil and truly find the best solution to our problems. Using these skills, I promise to listen to and consider all of the viewpoints expressed, setting aside my own personal beliefs and biases, listen to the experts in their field, regardless of political party or affiliation, and work to find the best solution for the people of Pembroke Pines when making decisions.
